Cell Phone Savings

Filed under: Phone — Jan @ 8:07 am

I figured out 2 ways to save on a cell phone bill:

  1. Add another line
  2. Take off extra services

Add another line

Do you have someone that you really trust that you can share a phone account with? A second line will be cheaper for someone than to have their own single line. Make prior arrangements how many minutes each person has. In the event of overage, each person will be responsible for their portion of going over. That way if cell phone “A” goes over in minutes and it effects cell phone “B”, they won’t have to pay extra if they stay within their allotted minute.Have the person who has the second line contribute to the main account. Both users will have a lower bill.

Take off extra services

See if you can add roadside assistance cheaper with your current auto insurance as a benefit with a current membership (like Sam’s Club, Costco, etc)

See how long until you can renew your contract. If it is at one year, take off the product guard/protection. When you renew your contract there will be the opportunity to buy a new phone cheap or even get one for free. This option is usually available at one year. So if your phone breaks, just renew the contract and get a new and updated phone! Contact your phone company for the details of your plan and contract.

Home Phone Savings

Filed under: Phone — Jan @ 10:47 am

I have a cell phone, but keep my land-line for faxing and because I have two daughters who love to talk! The unlimited minutes for a cell phone gave me less options than a land-line for about the same price, so I keep the land-line at home.

I re-evaluated the bill and realized I could take voice messaging off and get the bare minimum-saved me a little over $15 per month- about $180 per year. Which equals about 6 months of my basic phone bill now.

I thought I could do without voice messaging, but after about a week, I discovered it is an inconvenience for those who call on the house phone. I purchased a $15 answering machine which costs the same as about 2 3/4 months of voice messaging.

The other options that we rarely use are available on a per use basis.

I still have my personal cell phone, the land-line is mainly for the girls. I’m still trying to see if there are ways I could save on the cell phone, but haven’t come up with anything.

Phone

Well, I have a cell phone and a house phone. I need both, because I have kids in the house. I have a fax line on my house phone that I use.

I’m am going to look into some of the Voip options. Some of the concerns I have:

  • Internet access when the phone is being used
  • Cost of added equipment that may be needed
  • Lack of enhanced 911 service available (we do have enough old cell phones in the house, I guess we could use one just for 911 use)
  • Voice messaging

I’m going to see if I can just have the fax line through my land line without the main phone line.

I’m going to see if it would be inexpensive to have one of the cell phones services that have unlimited minutes. I don’t use it for my main cell phone use because the coverage can be poor. If it is just used from my home that may not be a problem.
